CTJ Wins BOA West Texas; 2nd BOA Title of 2017 Season

With power in its sound and purpose in its movement, the Claudia Taylor Johnson Marching Band turned in an amazing finals performance to win the Bands of America West Texas Regional Championship at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland.

The win was the band’s second BOA regional championship of the season and its fifth in program history. CTJ’s finals score of 90.20 was the highest score of any band in the nation this season during BOA competition.

Johnson finished 4.70 points ahead of second place Bellevue West, Nebraska (85.50). Timber Creek finished in third place at 82.60, followed by Clovis, N.M. (fourth place, 79.85) and Sherman (fifth place, 79.70). There were 23 bands in the first-year BOA competition.

CTJ was named Class AAAA champion following preliminaries competition with a score of 90.05. Other class champions were Bellevue West (AAA), Plainview (AA), and Pecos (A).

Additionally, CTJ swept the music, visual and general effect captions in finals and preliminaries, as it did in its season opening win at BOA Austin in September.

On a day that was warm and windy, bands from Texas, New Mexico and Nebraska found much friendship and camaraderie at the event. Following finals retreat, CTJ and the Del Rio High School Band — which finished in seventh place with its second BOA finals appearance of 2017 — got together for a group picture.

It was the perfect end to a great day — and a great day to be a Jaguar.
