Kris Hartman

Assistant Director, Percussion Studies

Kris Hartman is the Associate Percussion Director/Assistant Band Director/Arranger for Claudia Taylor Johnson High School and Frank M. Tejeda Middle School in San Antonio. Since the opening of Johnson High School in 2008-09, Mr. Hartman has been an integral part of building the percussion program from grades 6 through 12 as well as the development of the marching program.

Before relocating to San Antonio, Mr. Hartman worked in Austin with programs in the Leander Independent School District at Leander High School and Cedar Park High School. Mr. Hartman has also worked with band programs at Copperas Cove (Texas) High School, Ponca City (Okla.) High School, Newman Smith High School in Carrolton, Texas, and Victoria (Texas) Stroman High School. He has consulted with Victoria Memorial High School, Houston George Bush High School, and Brownsville Homer Hanna High School.

Mr. Hartman has worked with three different state marching band and Bands Of America Marching Band Finalist programs, including Leander High School, Cedar Park High School, and Johnson. Mr. Hartman’s marching percussion programs have won numerous titles throughout the years at various contests ranging from marching band festivals to drumline contests such as PASIC, Lone Star Classic, or South Texas Classic Competitions delivering Best Individual Section Awards or Overall Grand Champion Awards. The 2011 Johnson Percussion Section earned a perfect percussion score at Grand Nationals in 2011.

Mr. Hartman is a Victoria, Texas, native where he was instructed and influenced by then-Stroman High School band director Steve Hufford. Mr. Hartman auditioned for Drum and Bugle Corps as a sophomore and went on to march five years of snare drum with two different organizations, Nite Express Drum and Bugle Corps, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps as well as Blue Knights Indoor Percussion based out of Denver, Colo. During this time, Mr. Hartman was instructed by Steve Hufford, Dr. John Wooten, Eric Johnson, Tom Flowers, Mike McIntosh, George Haliotis, Stacy Stokes, Rick Rodrigues, Ben Maughmer, and Ralph Hardimon. Mr. Hartman studied at Victoria Community College, and then moved to Denton, Texas, where he played in the snareline under Paul Rennick in the University of North Texas Drumline, performing clinics in and around the Dallas area.
